S. O. Dunbar Inks
Old Ink Bottle Companies & Their History
Samuel O. Dunbar, apothecary (1850-1860) in Taunton, Massachusetts hand his hand in a wide range of businesses. He was a medicine maker as well as an ink maker. This combination is not too surprising since many in the apothecary trade were by necessity chemists. Dunbar sold ink in bottles embossed with his name. S. O. Dunbar bottles are highly collectible. The bottle shown below is one of the 1850 age bottles known from the S. O. Dunbar Company in Taunton. This bottle was thought to have contained ink but this specimen, with the original label shows it to be a medicine. It is likely that he used this container for both ink and medicine.
