Subject: Prof.  Callan's Brazillian Gum

Date: 01-02-2004

Digger, Just so happens at an auction, I bought a small bottle of Prof.  Callan's Brazillian Gum with the paper label still intact.  It turns out that this is for repairing rubber boots or putting rubber soles on leather boots and shoes.  My bottle is still practically full of the product.  It has a cork top.  It has the trademark "Old Man with Boot" on the label.  The bottle is about 3. 5 inches tall.  You had an earlier question about this, and I just wanted to help out if I could.  Dewayne

I need your help . I recently found a small white bottle, in decent condition that says "Colgate's Mirage Cream" on the front of it, a number 7 on the bottom of it, and it says New York , U. S. A.  on it. it also says " Reg US Pat Off" I have asked several people about it and they never heard of it before.  I called the Colgate company and they wanted me to send it to them, but I was not going to just hand it over like that.  If you have any information regarding this find please, let me know.  Thank you very much for your time.  Angelo, Worcester Ma.  USA

I have a nice jar that is embossed with a cluster of grapes and the words " T. M.  Reg.  U.  S.  Pat.  Off Wine Cured Pickles Manhattan Pickle Co.  Chicago Ill. " The bottom reads 4099-N 3 5 and what looks like the Anchor Hocking symbol.  Also a partial paper label.  Lid had slight rust and great graphics a grape cluster, nice green pickle and " Wine Cured Made with fresh cucumbers, garden dill , sweetened wine and blended with aged vinegar salt onions and rare spices".  The jar is clear with smooth shoulders and a seam that goes along both sides all the way to the top of the twist top.  Lid screws on and fits nice, probably held 16 oz.  Any ideas on age or value?   Thanks CaroL

Dear Sir , I am trying to fined out some information about these two bottles wine that i had given to me. I dont have a scanner so i can't send you a picture , but i will describe them the best that I can. They appear to be older Scottish men. They are only the heads of men one seems to have what looks to the top part of a bagpipe.  The other man looks to be wearing a very plain black hat.  Both bottles are in very good condition and have never been opened, and are sealed with a wax top.  There is a round red label on each one saying ITALIA and marchio nazioale.  the wine label says Casa Vento.  Vino Santo white wine.  It is 13. 8% alcohol by vol.  that is all the information i can really give you without a picture.  But if you have any information you could give me it would be greatly appreciated or any other resourses to help me find out more about them.  Thank you for your time Jeff Linton

Subject: Rare bottles?

Date: 04-02-2004

I have two bottles that I cannot find any information on at all, and I am hoping you will be able to help me.  First though, I have a question; when a number is embossed on the bottom of an old bottle, does it mean anything, and if so, what?  Now on to describing the two bottles. . .  The first bottle is made of green glass and does not have any kind of writing on it other than the number 1 embossed on the bottom.  It is shaped just like a "modern day pint bottle" only a bit bigger.  The bottle is painted red and has a picture label on it; the picture is of a woman standing next to a white horse and she is holding something, (I can't tell what she is holding) there are also other people in the picture that seem to be cowering from her.  The bottle also has four pieces of decorative leather on it, one around the neck, another in the front up towards the neck, and one down each side.  The second bottle is also made of green glass, but is more square in shape.  Embossed on the bottom is; "Made in Italy", under that is a symbol that looks like a V and a E that are attached and next to that is the letter A, then under that is the letter E.  There is a label on each of the four sides, but the label on one side is identical to the label on the opposite side of the bottle, so in actuality there are only two different labels, (I hope that made sense)! Each label has two different "coat of arms, " (or family crests) so, there are four different "coat of arms. " Under one of the "coat of arms" is the following, "Maximilien Joseph Leopold Ferdinand Duc de Baviere Prince Electeur Luic. " Under another "coat of arms" it says, "Colonel General de la Cavalerie Godefroi Charles Henry Prince de Turenne" Then under another "coat of arms" it has the following, "Ferdin IV Infant d'Espagne Roy" The label got cut off from the bottom of the fourth "coat of arms. " This bottle also has one piece of decorative leather around the neck.  The bottle also has decorative gold painting on it.  I am also 'attaching' pictures, but unfortunately, the pictures are not very good, sorry.  I really would appreciate any information you could give me, and if you are not able to give me any information on these bottles, maybe you could tell me how I would go about getting these appraised.  Thank you for your time.  Virginia Johnson

Subject: WHAT KIND OF BOTTLE?

Date: 05-02-2004

i was wondering if you could help me.  i recently purchased a huge box of older bottle of all types from an auction and their is one i this is especially nice but i don't know much about them as to how old they are, where they come from or the value of them.  it is green and their is no name or markings on it.  it appear to be a bunch of grapes maybe.  it does have a mold seam but you can barely see it.  it does appear to go over the top.  but just to the bottom edge of the bottle.  under the lip at the top seems to be some kind of indentation but only on about little more than half way around it.  it kind of seems like a sharp spot in it.  their is also another spot similar about half way down the neck of it but it looks like it was probably there when the bottle was made.  thank you for your time and any help

It is 8 inches tall with no top on it.  It has a stopper in it but probably doesn't belong as the bottle looks to be a screw on type. (The stopper in the top that is red/orange with small holes on the circleshaped top and the bottom "stem"?  is whitish with grooves. ) What is this bottle for and when was it made?  Thank you, Tina

Hi Digger, I was hoping you could help me.  My parents bought a cottage in Northern Ontario in the early sixties off an American couple from New York.  It was purchased lock stock and barrel and inside the medicine cabinet was a small dark amber bottle with liquid still inside about 1/3 full.  The bottle is approx.  4 and 3/4 inches tall and 1 and 3/4 inches wide facing front and about 3/4 of an inch wide on side as it slightly rounds in center.  The bottle has a ribbed design on the neck and sides and bottom and is all around except the label area is flat front and back.  The label is brown with beige print and then beige with brown print and then brown with beige print again.  I reads from top to bottom first in beige print. . brown background NATIONAL (Underlined) quality tested ( very small print centered under) GLYCERINE (Larger than National centered under) B. P.  Then small lettering in brown on beige background all centered as follows. . .  2 FL.  OUNCES PURE For Medicinal Use .  P U R Pour usage medicinal Then again in beige print small block style all underlined with brown background. .  NATIONAL DRUG AND CHEMICAL COMPANY OF CANADA, LIMITED " " HEAD OFFICE " " MONTREAL, CANADA The bottle has a black metal cap that we've never been able to open, it has a small dent in cap.  The bottom of the bottle is curved in a bit with an almost oval ring the symbol are 5 l ' .  l 3292 Thats about as close as I could come on my keyboard the dot is in the center of the diamond shape.  Could you please tell me all you know of this bottle and its value as I may be parting with it.  Someone told me that it is rare to find Canadian bottles?  Anything would help.  Thanks Joe Bolton Ontario Canada.

Subject: Old bottle from Florida Everglades dig.

Date: 08-02-2004

Hello, I came across your most informative website while researching a bottle I found at a flea market.  The person I bought it from dug it up 20 years ago in the Everglades.  It has no words on it, and has a single seam that runs the entire length of the bottom, even to the crude pontil scar.  There is a number 3 on the bottom and a symbol that's oval shaped with a superimposed football shape.  In the pontil are I believe E and a wave like symbol.  The cap is layered with rust and doesn't come off.  There are two threads on the cap and there is an indented circle in the cap.  Could you please tell me what this bottle is or any information on it.  The lip does have a line beneath it and the seam on the sides of the bottle goes past the lip.  The bottle has an blue and green iridescences.  The pontil mark isn't a circle and is crude.  I was told it was dug up from a Seminole indian mound, I don't know if that's true or not.  Thank you for your time and any advise you may have.  Geisele

Subject: Old green rum bottles.

Date: 09-02-2004

Hello, For many years my family has been trying to locate someone with knowledge of the dark olive colored hand blown rum bottles that were found buried in our the basement of our circa 1670 home.  They have a 2-3 inch long neck and a round body.  No two are the same shape or size.  They all differ slightly from half pint size to quart size.  It has been documented in historical records that slave ships would enter a cove area behind the house.  Slaves would be held in the basement of the house and supposedly these bottles came off the ship and had been filled with rum.  When the house was purchased by my family there were photos that showed bars on the basement windows.  (When the chimneys were cleaned out and rebuilt there bottles found stuffed up inside the chimney doors. ) Many years ago my mother tried, to obtain information about these bottles but was unsuccessful.  No one had ever seen these bottles.  I am hoping now with the use of the Internet maybe to more successful.  Someone else out there must have one of these bottles.  Can you shed any light on the origin and value of this type of bottle?  Thank you very much for your time.  Kendall

Hi Digger, Here's a bottle question.  I ran across this bottle in New Mexico.  Seems to date to the mid 1880's and is like my "Santa Fee" bottle on my website: http://www. nmt. edu/~tromero/sfee. jpg Except that this one is aqua.  Embossed: "P. FRICK & Co / EVANSVILLE / IND" with "T W & Co" on the base.  Can you tell me anything about it or point me in the right direction?  Any idea of a ballpark value?  Thanks again for any info you can give, -Tino

* Photo 0001 is the base – all that is legible around the ring is in embossed letters (the lettering goes all the way around, but half are illegible) “LAW FORBIDS SALE OR” and the info in the center is “D-334 118 8(or 6)2 4 (or A)” * Photo 0003 is the lip – the mold seam comes all the way to the top, but is not visible on top looking down * Photo 006 is full side of this 11” high bottle; the Marc Anthony & Cleopatra design is repeated on reverse and is embossed * The last image depicts the surprise I found when I was holding the bottle to a light to see what I could see inside the bottle – from the outside, the bottle appears to be black or DARK brown, but with a good light from behind it is purple.  * Condition – there is one very tiny chip in the neck between the ears, and a small scratch right near the chip, other than that it’s in excellent condition.  * I would be very interested in the history of this bottle, especially if I’m correct that it was made in ’62.  Where could I find more info and, of course, I’d like to know an estimated value – it does not have anything else with it; I picked it up at an auction in a bunch of junk boxes for a $1.  Any assistance is greatly appreciated.  Ciao for now, Ray Tears only run to the end of your chin; smiles go on forever.  Keep smiling; it's contagious!

Digger, I have searched everywhere for this one name embossed on this bottle I found on an island in Key West.  It's a clear, thin bottle, 9 1/2 in height, molded for easy holding with hands.  There are very very faint seams that run up the sides up over the top of the lip.  I guess the top would be described as a Sloping Collar.  The words embossed are, Federal Law Forbids Sale or Re-Use of this bottle.  Under these words inside a 9 sided embossed shape is the company name.  C. H.  GRAVES & SONS CO.  BOSTON, DISTILLER SINCE 1849.  The back of the bottle is embossed FULL PINT.  The bottle is also decorated with rectangle shaped boxes, like a checker board, on the bottom third of the front of the bottle and the design goes up both sides of the bottle.  Okay, any hope?  I would so much appreciate any light you could shed on this.  Thanks, Greta

Hello! I have a question that is not really bottle related, but I was hoping you could help me.  I have a glass dispenser with a red plunger top and a metal neck with no marks on it at all, and I have no clue where to look for what it is.  It's profile looks a great deal like the Great Gonzo from the Muppets.  I could send a digipic if you know someone who could tell me what it is.  If you can, I'd appreciate being sent int he right direction.  Thank you, Gina

Hello! We recently acquired a very unusual bottle (for us at least) from an estate auction.  After a few hours of research. . .  we turned up very little (but your site!).  From what we have gleaned, this was a bottle from a tavern in Washington, D. C, possibly from 1905 - Prohibition.  We have found at least two inquires on the Internet about the glasses the liquor was poured in, telling us this much. . .  but nothing at ALL about the bottles! So, please help us if you can! Anything you can tell us would be fantastic for two beginner bottle collectors :) Attached are two photos of the bottle in question.  Thank you very much, Betty and Rhoda in Lusby, MD

Hi Digger.  I have a bottle that I would like to know the history and age of.  It is ~ 14 to 15 inches tall and is made out of two molds.  One half of the bottle is thicker than the other and the glass has bubbles in it! The seam does not go over the lip and the design on the bottle is very interesting.  It is completely star studded with a crest in the middle.  The crest has something like a unicorn and a monkey with these two creatures holding a circle that contains something similar to BB on the inside.  Below this is a banner with words that are hard to pick out.  I think is it "DIRU-ER MON DROIT" or something like that! Below this is a big space that has no stars where I think a label would have sat! Sorry No Picutre.  I hope you can help! Thanks, JOY!

Hi Digger, I have 4 bottles not listed that are not associated with a product let me know if you would want pictures of them: 1) aqua, rect.  4 1/4" flared lip, embossed HASTINGS/UTICA NY.  on opposite sides in indented panels.  (not real exciting to look at, but the only pontiled med that I know of embossed with "UTICA" on it.  Surprising since it was a large bustling town then.  2) aqua, 3 7/8" tall, flared lip, rect with beveled corners, embossed all on front: I. S.  SEABURY/HEMPSTEAD/L.  I.  (related to J S Seabury??  ) 3) aqua, 4 1/2" tall, flared lip, cylinder, embossed vertically, top to bottom: PREPARED BY/ N. W.  CARPENTER/NORWICH. N. Y.  I purchased this one from one of Jim's auctions, so you may have seen it.  Very weak embossing, I have seen one other and it was the same weak embossing.  4).  aqua, 2 15/16" tall, rolled lip, square, embossed on 4 sides: J. F.  BATCHELOR/LIQUID/HAIR DYE/NO 1 (the "R" in Batchelor is raised and offset from the other letters on the mold because the letters wouldn't all fit) I have heard that this one is from Utica NY .  I'm not sure how it relates to D.  Batchelor, the bottles look almost identical.  My last bottle was dug in Utica NY from a privy by a "rookie" privy digger in his 2nd privy ever.  I have attached a photo and will send another one of the other side.  It doesn't photograph real well because the embossing is a little weak.  It is especially hard to read because the letters are ALL REVERSE!!!!!!! It is yellow green, 4 1/2 " tall, rect with beveled corners, rolled lip.  It is embossed on 2 sides: J.  LAMPPINS then ARCADIAN/ELIXER.  It is much easier to read with a mirror.  There is a reference in Baldwin's book for this product in the Utica directory 1851-52.  J.  Lamppin sold soda and mineral water on Broad St.  in Utica NY.  There are pontiled sodas that are known.  I suppose this bottle is so rare because they likely REALLY broke the mold! I can imagine how upset Lamppin was when he saw his first lot of bottles and they were illegible.  I guess he could have used a paper label also.  Nobody I have spoken to has seen or heard of this bottle.  I showed Jim H.  a picture of it and he wanted to buy it.  It is the pride of my collection!

Subject: Scotch Whiskey

Date: 26-02-2004

Hello, I was looking at your publications and wondering which one to order first.  Maybe you can help me with that.  The first bottle I would like to research is an alcoholic beverage bottle.  It is about 18 inches high and it is scotch whiskey.  It has a music box in the bottom with a Scot dancer that turns with the music.  The music box plays "Coming thru the rye" (label on the bottom).  The bottle is fat on the bottom and skinnys toward the top and has a white bottom (music box) and long white top that flares in width.  There is some black and red decorative trim glued on in three different sections of the bottle and even still has the black and red plastic ribbon they put around it.  It has two labels on the front.  The top one is smaller and reads: "100 Months Old 4/5 Quart".  The other front label is oval shaped and reads: "Produce of Scotland, 1857 (with a dragon in a castle in between the 18 & the 57) Established Gilbey's, 4/5 Quart, 86 Proof, Sprey Royal, Scotch Whiskey, A Blend, All 100% Old Scotch Whiskeys distilled in Scotland, blended by W & A Gilbey, Limited, Glen Spey Distillery Speyside Scotland.  There is also a label on the bottom (music box) back that reads: 86 Proof 4/5 Quart, Distilled and Blended in Scotland, Imported and Bottled by Glen Spey Ltd. , Clermont, KY.  Offices: Edinburgh, Scotland.  One last identifier, by the way this bottle is unopened, there is a U. S.  Internal Revenue Tax Paid Bottle Stamp Sticker across the opening on the back and there is a number on the stamp.  I dont know how full this bottle was originally, but if it was completely full, it does appear to have evaporated some over the years and I would also like to find out how to best care for it from this point forward.  Thank you in advance for any information you can give me.  I wasn’t sure which publication would be the best.  Denise

Subject: cleaning soda bottles

i have a question about cleaning soda bottles that have labels, the kind that seem like they are painted on i don’t know what they call it.  Anyway i have been digging out a dump site across the street and am finding a lot of soda bottles from the 40's through the 60's and i need to know how to clean them without the labels flaking off.  It seems with some of them the label starts to flake off as soon as the water hits it.  i usually just rinse the bottles with water to get all the mud off of them as i am digging near a groundwater fed stream.  Is there a way to prevent this from happening?  Or is it that some just have bad labels?  Some of the others that i dig out have been fine and the label hasn’t flaked at all.  Also is there anything i can do to preserve the label on the bottle.  I know these soda bottles aren’t as old as a lot of collectors like to find but its good enough for me.  And since i live in Washington there’s not a lot of really old sites around where i live.  anyway thanks a lot and the site is very informative.

You had an inquiry about an Agawam Gin bottle, which I'd come across when trying to find information about Agawam Gin.  It may at one time have been made in Agawam, MA, as the inquirer had noted about the bottle in his/her possession.  My understanding is that the Agawam Gin Company had also at some point been situated on the site where Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance headquarters is located in Springfield, MA.  (Agawam, MA had once been a parish of Springfield, MA during colonial times. ) Since Mass Mutual Life Insurance Co.  was established in 1851, and the gin company may have ceased to exist then, there is at least a chance that bottles bearing the name Agawam Gin could be more than 100 years old.

Recently my father passed away and in cleaning out the estate, we found this bottle.  On the front it reads Federal law Forbids sale or re-use of this bottle (I had read on the internet about the use of the word Prohibits meaning after the prohibition--but this uses 'forbids') There is a face of a man wearing glasses and on one side of face is a house and the other side it looks like a factory with billows of smoke or possibly this is a boat with smoke stacks and a lighthouse in background On the side is an embossed wheat design--3 shelves On the back (zoom in) there is an slight indention (you can feel the line) Around the bottom it reads: Harry (not sure next) either an E or an & sign and then I think Aiklen Jr or possibly Harry Elb? ken Sr (then a star) or the S could be a J.  On the bottom (zoom in) it appears to be D230 then the middle emblem and below that M 845 On the side of the emblem is a 55 emblem 5 The bottle is 6 1/2" tall and has screw top The seam appears to go all the way to top and thru the screw part.  There is no chips in the bottle anywhere including the top edge.  We were curious as to the purpose of this bottle--tonic--whiskey or medicine, the approximate date and the value of such a bottle?  Any thing you could offer would be greatly appreciated.  We also found what my mother called a "vinegar" jar.  It is orangy in color-has two handles--if this is something you could tell me about, I'll get pictures of that one too.  Thank you ever so much! Hi, I was just wondering what might be the general age of this bottle (early 1900's) and what might be in it (medical use).  It was found at Fort Seward in North Dakota.  It is a Johnson & Johnson bottle (inscribed on metal part of cork).  Total height is 15cm from bottom to top of cork.  Has a little pontil mark on bottom, not to deep.  Thanks for the help, Adam Thesing NDSU Student

Subject: BottleQuestion

Date: 28-02-2004

Hi, We recently purchased a building dating from the 1870's and in doing some reconstruction in the basement unearthed a union flask glass bottle ("union" embossed with clasped hands and eagle, A&DHC toward the base).  I found from the links on the www. antiquebottles. com site that the markings put the age of this bottle in about the right time frame for the early years of our building.  Unfortunately, the bottle is not in very good shape (missing lip and cracked bottom) and so is probably not worth anything to anyone but us.  My question is in regards to the color of the bottle.  It is a highly iridescent blue-green, very even coloring throughout.  I don't see this as a normal color for this style of bottle (from the articles and notes that I have found on the net) and wondered if it might narrow the date range or indicate any other information about the origins of the bottle or if it was just a reaction to the material it has been buried in for the last umpteen years.  Any information you can give me would be appreciated.  Thank you, Beth

Hi Digger! I have collected bottles for many years, and have never run across one that I am so curious about.  Anything you can tell me will be helpful. . . It is a flask, clear, about 7 inches tall about 3. 5 inches wide, screw top with the number 3 on the bottom.  It appears to be from a mold with spider webs from top to bottom, and a single spider in the center of the bottle, on each side.  Also, I have a pretty large collection, some a very old (late 1800's) How would I go about selling any of them?  Thank you for your time, Lynn

Subject: Answer to query from your April 2000 list of questions

Date: 28-02-2004

Hi Digger, I just run across this question from your April 2000 column: Please can you tell me about a bottle that my son-in-law found digging?  It is about12in high, green and with seams going down both sides.  It has the Letters KC & Co.  on it.  The lettering is kind of pretty.  Also when he found it, it had a crooked screw in the bottle with lettering on the screw, which I can't read?  Thank you for your time.  Hope you can help?  Pat Hughes

I was not able to locate any information.  I thought that the KC & Co.  might be the name of a glass company, but I couldn't verify that.  Maybe a reader can help.  Digger.  " *****************************************************

I can help on that one: Although the writer said it was 12 inches tall, I believe that to be a mis-statement.  Sounds like the hutch sodas embossed "K. C. & CO. " on the side.  Nearly always found in aqua, these date 1880-1895 and are found mainly in the Louisville KY area.  (These are one of those local bottles which are almost never mentioned in bottle literature!) Searching the Lou.  directories, etc, I have found that Klee Coleman & Company was a mineral water company that used these bottles, and they were based in either Dayton, OH or in Louisville (offices in both but I don't know which was the head office).  I have variants from 5 different glass companies, and they all are about 7 inches tall.  The metal "screw" is the closure which is often found stuck in the neck of the bottle or laying inside. .  The variant I find most often carries the "S. G. W. LOU. KY" mark on the base which stands for the Southern Glass Works (1877-c. 1885) of Louisville.  Best regards, David Whitten Clarksville, Indiana

Date: 28-02-2004

Hi, just read your postings and really enjoyed them.  We also have found many old glass bottles under our house around the foundation- as have several of our neighbors.  I was just wondering what the reason for this would be?  Seems mysterious to me why there would be bottles from 1870 on up to the 1950's under our house.  One in particular I have been unable to find any information on.  It is about 2" high, squareish round and the mold line stops at the shoulder with an applied lip, probably had a stopper of some sort at one time.  Clear glass and it says Glyco-thymoline on the front.  Any ideas?  Thanks W. I just found this bottle.  I think it is a soda (as in soda pop) bottle, it has a crown top, is seamless, very light green and has embossed cursive writing on two sides; stating Long Distance.  At the bottom of the bottle it also has A. M.  DODGE, INC.  (again on two sides) and under that the following is embossed in smaller block letters 8684E Root 26 (I am guessing on part of this embossing at the bottom as it is right around the lower part of the bottle).  You can see air bubbles in the glass.  The bottle was found in Shepherdstown, WV where I live.  thanks, Suzanne
