Subject: G.N. BACON HARRISBURGH PA. MIDDLE 1800'S BOTTLE Hi ! This is what I know of this bottle. It is a honey yellow (very peculiar color). Poorly wood mold cast glass blob top, top applied. The roughness of the bottle comes from the mold being wet and glass being poured into mold wet (my guess). I have never seen another like this except for once maybe 30 years ago. The glass looks sick but after seeing the inside of this bottle I know it isn't, a glossy honey yellow inside very rare color indeed. The glass has rough wood mold markings on the bottle, plus there was (something foreign in the mold at the time of pouring the glass bottle) my guess. (snowflake like patterns in the glass). Putnam on the bottom. Harrisburg spelled Harrisburgh on the bottle. What I've found out so far leads me to believe it is a milk bottle. stamped on back is (this bottle not to be sold). The lettering on the slug plate is almost perfect lightly worn. My guess on the age of the bottle is about 1860. What happened to this bottle? Any info you could share on this super one of a kind bottle would be greatly appreciated. thank you for your time, Gerald!

I was wondering if you could help me out on some old P. Garnier bottles of liquors. I have a variety of them and wanted to put them up for sale but I don't have history on them. Bottle is 4 1/2 " tall the bottle is clear with a label of Trade PG Mark, Peach_liqueur artifically colored superior quality , P Garnier"S Signature on the bottle.France Enghien Made in france with a red seal on top that say pg it also has some writing on it that say something grand prix something or another 1904. and an Apricot same as the Peach. 2). same type bottle same height, that says MARASCHINO DELLA FABBRICA , Del Signor P. Garnier enghien made in france.Red seal with the pg on lid.Bottom stamp T C 1878 3). same type bottle same height, that says artifically colored PARFAIT AMOUR, Medaille d OR paris 1889-1900 P. Garnier signature , Made in france . On the bottom of this bottle is a number stamped 3571. and also it has his name stamped on the back of the bottle P. Garnier. 4). Dark amber bottle lable Cherry Liqueur with P Garnier signature on the lable with a stamp on the bottom of bottle 3582. 1900 5). Dark Green or Amber this one says GRANDS PRIX S'LOUIS 1904 LONDRES 1908, PARIS CEMEME DE VANILLE P.GARNIER ENGHIEN FRANCE STAMPED NUMBER ON BOTTOM IS 3582 I have more but just curious what these may be worth. Dear Mr. Odell, I have an unopened bottle of Very Old Fitzgerald bourbon, bottled in 1955 and still has a Kentucky tax stamp on it. The label says: "Barreled in 1947, bottled in 1955 Very Old Fitzgerald antique bottle". The stamp says: "1/5 gallon distilled spirits". My husband and I are curious as to the value of this bottle. There are no chips in the glass, label has small tear on back label, other wise in excellent condition, and the bottle has imprint about Federal law forbids sale or re-use of this bottle. Hello Digger I have found 2 cases with about 20 bottles of Clorox bottles in them I have dated them to 1940-1945 the are amber class 1 pint with screw top and most have paper still on them on the bottom it says REG. U.S PAT. 6-8 OFF. and the word Clorox in a diamond there are also two symbols there one looks like a planet with a ring around it and the other is two lines (II) the paper color is blue and red can u tell me if they are worth anything? Hi, We have a full unopened bottle still in the box, It has a cork top and has the name St. Joseph's Pine Tar Honey used for relief of cold symptom on the label. The bottle looks to be clear and has bubbles and swirl marks on it. It doesnt have a date or anything but it does have a diamond shape with the number 4 inside. Hi, I've had an old, I believe cologne bottle, for quite a few years. Although the print on the bottom is hard to read, I am pretty sure that it says Made in Roumania. I cannot read the top line too well, it has a BO and then I can make out the end of the last word, ADE, I think it is "BOTTLE MADE.................IN ROUMANIA" The bottle is in the shape of a Sailor, all thick clear or frosted glass with painted blue eyes and blue cravat/scarf and his shoes are painted black. The cap for his uniform is missing, but is the lid to the bottle. At first I thought that the spelling couldn't have been Roumania, because I've only seen it written Romania before, but apparently it is a variant spelling of it. Do you have any info on this bottle? I'm not even sure where to go look for info on this, I don't know if the bottle was made there and it was filled and marketed in the USA or not. It reminds me of some of the Avon bottles, but from any of the Avon dealers I've talked to they don't recognize it from "old" avon bottles. Good Morning Digger, I would like to ask a questions of several bottles I have found in the early 1990's at a sewer site. I am only asking for some history and value of these bottles if possible. The first is an old La Choy Soy Sauce Bottle with the Lable embossed on the glass Pat. 88228 (Clear Glass) about 4 inches in size. The glass is somewhat stained. The next Bottle looks like an Aunt Jemima Syrup Bottle (Bottle looks like Aunt Jemima) with the the company on bottom of bottle reading Beau Peep Products (Clear Glass) about 6 inches in size. The next is a Hot Sauce Bottle with embossed letters PA-POOSE and E.A Zatarain & Sons, Inc New Orleans, USA. On Bottom of Bottle it reads Name of company again and USA Desing PAt (clear Bottle) about 6 inches in size. The Other is also a clear bottle with two handles on top of the bottle and it reads on bottom Penick & Ford LTD INCPAT 90963 (Clear Bottle) about 9 inches tall. Other bottle is about 4 inches in size clear bottle round on top and squared on bottom with embossed letters The Singer Manic Company (Bottle is somewhat stained). The next one is aabout 12 inches in size squared and Brown. It does read Tequila, Cuervo Tequila, Jal, Mexico. All these bottles will use a screw on type lid. This final bottle is about 1 1/2 inches in size it is embossed with the words 30 Phenola Wafers Upjohn on bottom of bottle there is a daimond with the number 1 inside of it. This bottle is clear and will use a cork typw cap. Excuse all of the questions but your help would be appreciated. Anthony

Digger, Please help me if you can. I dug this bottle up about 17 years ago and cannot seem to find anyone who knows anything about it. It is a 6 sided clear bottle 8 inches tall that tapers up from the bottom to the neck, with Log Cabin Syrup embossed on the lower front of the bottle. It has 2 knotches on the neck just at the lip above the finger hole. Possibly they held a flip wire to keep a stopper in place. It has two mold lines that stop at the lip. On the smooth base is the letter B and about an inch and a half away is numeral 5. The bottle has no stains or chips and is in perfect shape. I would like to know the history and the value. Hello, my name is Melinda and this past summer while walking the beach in Gloucester, Mass I found several bottles which washed ashore.I can find no info on any...maybe you can help. Markings on bottom of 1st bottle approx 3 inches tall round with a flared lip clear glass, with small amound of damage had a cork stopper F.A.Barker Gloucester, Mass. The 2nd is approx 2 1/2 inches tall clear glass, is square with a round neck and lip with markings on bottom 863 above a B in a circle with the number 2 under the circle. 3rd bottle is rectangular in shape clear glass, with round neck and lip has the cork in bottle (loose) no markings. The 4th bottle brown appox 5 1/2 inches tall had a screw cap top, seams that run up both sides from bottom with an oval on bottom with the capital letter A inside....(a vanilla extract bottle?) Last but not least another approx 3 inch clear glass container front and back of glass embossed with 3 petal flowers and a scollopp designat the bottom.The sides are seamed , and bottle is shaped like a diamond except for the bottom.Bottle has a round nech with a squared lip...one corner of the squared lip has been sheered off from being in the ocean. Oh and it looks as if the glass may be somewhat irredecent or it may have been setting in something for a long time? Have you any idea what these bottles are and worth?

I happened to stumble into your Webster when I was looking for information on this bottle I found at a garage sale. Its so unusual it will be hard to describe. Its actually a candle holder, but it has liquid in the bottle part with a red wax seal on the top. On the top half (four sides), two of the sides have a knight killing, I think a dragon. It's dark grey in color, but the knight and some decoration has a white glaze over it. It has a rod iron with wood handle and the bottle is around 8 inches tall. The bottom half has two flat sides with the middle cut out for the candle (and a raised place for the candle.) The only markings I could find is on the bottom, and it looks like a K without the line on the right of it. Its in pretty good shape I think. It still has liquid , on the top, sides and bottom. Sir I am very curious as to the likely pedigree of a bottle that I bought a few years ago at a car boot sale (not a promising start I know). It is in the shape of an elephant, with raised trunk and is of clear (not aqua) glass. From base to tip of trunk it measures eighteen inches and weighs a hefty six pounds. There is a cork stopper, leading me to wonder if it is a wine bottle? There are no marks that I can find. There are what may be seams running on back and front but only on the trunk area to the lip, not visible the main body of the animal. The figure is quite nicely sculpted with skin folds, ears, eyes, feet etc. The base is in two parts i.e. two front feet together and two rear feet together. This bottle may be old, it may be modern - I just wish I knew. Even the person I bought it from hadn't a clue and said that it 'might be a wine bottle from Africa' ! Digger, I found a bottle buried on the bottom of the Chesapeake Bay rather conical in shape but six-sided, a little over nine inches tall, about three inches wide at the base and one inch wide at the top, clear, thick glass with "Blue Label Ketchup" printed in raised letters on the bottom. I've never heard of that brand and thought perhaps it was produced before my time which would make it pretty old. Do you have any information on that brand? By the way, I've found many bottles in the bay with barnacles growing on them. The base of the barnacle attaches very securely to the glass, almost seeming to imbed itself. I met you out at the Springfield Ohio show with my uncle Dave Beeler. I just unearthed a English Female Bitters from Louisville Kentucky and was wondering what these are worth. It is staying in my collection but no one seems to know much about it. How has collecting been going for you lately? Been to any good shows? Me and Dave are getting ready to head out down south for New Orleans and make a swing through Jackson for the show there next Saturday. We have been digging some really good stuff in an around St. Louis. Surprisingly not much has come off of the Stadium site except what has been dug by me and Dave. I hit a area of fill and got 5 puffs, a wine and a champagne bottle, a rare aqua pontiled soda from St. Louis, and 17 different Bachelor's Hair Dyes, open pontil. It was sure fun while it lasted. We dug a woodliner, brickliner and a cistern and they were all new!!!! We couldn't believe it. We didn't get a bottle older than 1890. It was shocking since it was in one of the oldest parts of St. Louis. Oh well. I dug last week and got a bunch of sodas, some pontiled, and a super scarce ale from St. Louis that is yellow. Unfortunately, the ground up here is freezing fast with all the cold nights so no more probing. That is why New Orleans looks so good right now. 65 degrees and sunny!! Easy probing and lots of pontils if you can find the right spot. Well, hope all is well and maybe I'll see you at a upcoming show. Your fellow digger and collector, Brandon Smith

HI, I have been going through your bottle page and did see one close to mine .I was wondering if you knew anything about a St. Pierre Smirnoff bottle.The label does have a pic of a crown w/ 1800 dates, what was differant about mine is it has a 2 inch purlpe glass around the lip of the bottle. and a cork top .The top comes up to a point, and is very nice. I also found 2 bottles in the woods. Hi - I was checking out the internet under John Gebhardt (my name - and my great grand-father's) and found this post from May 2000 Have a old beer bottle ceramic cap its registered it says this bottle not to be sold name on bottle John Gebhardt Boston Mass can you tell me if it has any value? I was not able to find any reference to your bottle as a beer bottle. You do not mention the color of the bottle. It is possibly a soda if it is aqua instead of amber. I'd guess a value of $8-15 for a blob top bottle, less for a crown top. Digger What I know - which is little - is that this is my great grandfather - born in Bavaria in the 1860s', emigrated to the US in the 1870's (I think) - and eventually operated a liquor bottling business based in Boston. I do have a bottle of his. He died in 1925 - but I'm unsure of the effect of prohibition on his business. I'm probably couldn't know less about bottles - but mine is light green - with a ceramic top. I recently came across a very old Smirnoff vodka bottle, it is a 80 pr half gallon in a bottle I've never seen before. It says Ste. Pierre Smirnoff Fls. and Cmuphobckar Bogka No. 21 on the front of the label. On the banner it reads... Purveyors to the inperial russian court -1886-1917. It has a large crown indentation in the side of the glass and above the crown is a large 1818 in a box, it is unopened. It has a US internal revenue bottle stamp with the number 623974087 stamped on that, and a larger stamp 949? across the cap. I'm sorry I dont have a scanner or camera. Found amber/brown bottle (3" in length) in desert. Has a screw-type cap, but type of metal (tin?) a mystery as it is in bad shape. The top was intact until touched and then disintegrated. Am assuming the bottle had bitters in it or possibly medicine - iodine. The bottle has the AnchorHocking symbol (anchor w/H) on base with the numbers "80 04" at the top of the base, the anchor underneath and "6" on one side of anchor and '2' on the other side. The bottom part of the bottle has a flaw
-- bulge on one side. Could desert temperatures cause this? Have searched areas (AnchorHocking, bottle embossing, history of screw caps, etc.) to find out for what the bottle was used. Have lots of assumptions: embossing dates could reflect Aug 04 of 1962. Whether it's super old is unimportant

Hi Digger, Just a quick note: On your "basics" webpage you state: "For the period from 1870-1910 bottles had hand tooled lips and smooth bases. Then in 1892 an automatic bottle machine was invented. With this machine the entire lip was molded along with the body of the bottle and the need for hand finishing disappeared. Early machine made bottles..............." Where do you get this 1892 date? The first truly automatic bottle machine wasn't invented until 1903, by Michael Owens. Although the Owens Bottle Co soon had a machine in production in '03 or '04, it wasn't until 1920 or so until nearly all of the other American glass factories had switched to ABM. Being very expensive, many of the smaller glass factories continued hand-blowing bottles for many years after 1903 and never did do the switch. BTW.......I am glad you didn't promote the nonsense about the mold-seams being a good indicator of age. I have seen many 1860s or 70s era bottles with the "applied lip" where the seam goes completely & clearly visible, uninterrupted all the way to the top EXCEPT for the actual band of applied glass. But in alot of the later tooled-lip bottles (some as late as 1920) the mold seam has been totally "wiped away" by the tooling process. Seeing this mold seam obliteration would make a new collector assume it is a very early bottle, IF they followed the oft-repeated formula about the mold seams and how far up they go in relation to age of the bottle. Hello Digger: I have purchased a Shell OIl bottle, that I am wondering is a reproduction. On the bottom of the bottle it reads "1933 design rec'd" It stands 15 & 1/2" and has the shell logo. Under the logo it says Shell Motor Oil (and below that) Shell motor oil company of canada limited. It isn't real heavy glass like I would think it should be. The part that really has me concerned is the bottom reading. I can't think of another meaning for 1933 design REC'D other than recopied??? Any input on this bottle? I bought it on ebay, and it looks in very good shape with not much rubbing or scratches at all! Are there repro's of this bottle that you have heard of? DEAR Digger, I have two bottles. Both I believe they are from the same company. The first one is around and looks like a soda bottle on the front of it , it has MILLVILLE BOTTLE in an high arch going toward the top of the bottle. Underneath that in a smaller arch going towards the bottom it has the word WORKS. Just above that it has 1888. Below the label that is raised it has THIS BOTTLE NOT above BE SOLD below that. The color of the bottle is blue with some small bubbles and various raised marks on the outside of it. It is 10"1/4 inches high and 2"1/4 inches wide at the bottom. It narrows at the top to 1" and has a white ceramic or porcelain top that is held on by a flip top wire bail. It has a heart shaped hole the wire goes through with 3 dots one at the top and 2 below it. It has USA, GFM, and HILA. The other bottle I have is blue fish that is 7"1/2 inches tall, 3" at the base. The mouth of it is 1"1/4 wide. The right side it has DOCTOR FISCH'S BITTERS raised just below the eye of the fish. The left side just below the eye it has MILLVILLE NEW JERSEY. Both of the writing arch from the top to the bottom then back to the top again. At the bottom of the fish underneath it has recessed house type marking with the letters WHLATOH H. The bottle is Embossed with ........ W.T.& S and ....... W M Barnard and Sons, London Height 9" Circumference 8" Bottle has a tapered mouth that has been applied over the lip, rather crudly.There is no embossing on the base . The bottle has been Pinched twice when moulten forming two compartments.The lower contains the contents of the bottle. The upper contains a glass marble and a cork gasket that would fit under a lip on the top. When poured with the Upper "pinch" down the contents would free pour as the pinch would hold the marble. When poured with the top pinch up the marble would roll down and contact the gasket , covering the exit and allowing only a measured "shot" to pour out. The bottom "pinch" contains the marble in the top compartment. It was found in central British Columbia, Canada. In an old Ghost Town called Wallasheen. I would really appreciate it if you could identify what kind of bottle this is and how old it is , and if it has value. I am not a collector , just curious as it a rather unique item. I have a very light blue opaque glass bottle that is shaped like the ancient Grecian water picture. It has a picture of the Parthenon, in the back ground; Plato, Aristotle and Socrates are in the fore ground talking. On the bottom read, "Federal law forbids sale or re-use of this bottle. Is there anything you can tell me about this bottle? It's three sections linked together with a wire frame to make the shape of a bottle. Two of the three necks have the original corks and the bottom has a patent pending notation with the year 1896 on it. On the sides of each section are etched 'Rye', 'Creme de Menthe' and as I recall 'Rum' (I don't have it with me so I'm guessing). Hi, I worked in Nigeria many years ago and brought back about 30 bottles that I was told were from late 1700's and English Gin Bottles. They were found in the Escravos River and supposedly were thrown overboard during slave trade. Anyway, they all have a name on them and some have pictures- flags, dogs, Serval, rabbit, Bison. Was wondering if this description sounds familiar, and if so - what they might be worth. Most of them are olive green, but a few are clear. Digger, I am trying to find out more about a bottle that was made/contained a Smirnoff product. The bottle is in the shape of a bear, tan to beige in color. It has a 1/5 quart marking on it.It also states Hartford, Conn. on the bottle. There is also writing that is STE Pierre Smirnoff, USA and STE Pier Poland 1886-1917 Heublein Sales Corp. Hello Digger, A friend of mine found this bottle for me and I am searching for information on it. It is a Dr. W.B. Caldwell Syrup Pepsin Bottle, with Monticello, Illinoise on the left side, and Dr WB Caldwell, INC. On the right. The bottom has a P with a circle around it and a 2 to the Left. The bottle is in great shape. No cracks or chips. But has not been cleaned. In my research I found this information: Dr. Caldwell's Syrup of Pepsin In 1885, Dr. Wm. B. Caldwell moved from Cisco, Illinois, and began practicing medicine in Monticello. He concocted a remedy called "Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin, " an alcoholic sugar solution containing senna, a small amount of a salicylate, a tiny amount of pepsin, and flavored with oil of peppermint and aromatics. Caldwell began manufacturing this in a drugstore below his offices. In 1893, Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin was officially marketed locally to surrounding towns, and by 1903 had achieved a national prominence. Manufacturing was started in a building west of the Wabash between Livingston and Washington Streets. In 1924 the final building phase of the four story building was completed. After several ownerships, the plant was closed in 1984. The building still stands on the site. Old Dr. Caldwell bottles have found all over the United States and Canada. I found a box that has about 60 old bottle caps. I would guess from mid to early 60's. There is about 55 Coke and 4 or 5 Fresca caps. On the outside of the caps there is a baseball above the Coke name. The inside they have pictures and names of baseball player's. On the inside it has the team name, player name and the 2 letter designation for the player's position. Are these something people collect? What would there worth be?

I found a one quart bottle at a thrift shop that appears to be somewhat old. It is shaped like a milk bottle, is clear glass however has a purplish tint (most likely from aging), and has the following labeling (as raised letters - unpainted); SMDA Springfield, O (this is located about 1/3 of the way down from the top where the neck widens) Directly on the other side is " 3 cents" (cents is the cent sign) Around the bottom is "REGISTERED - SEALED" "L52 ONE QUART LIQUID" On the bottom, in the center, is a circle with what appears to be the # 4 inside it. All letters appear to be "doubled" when you look at it at any angle. It is about 12" tall. I've looked everywhere to find anything on this but no luck. Any chance you can help? Sincerely, Gary R. I found a clear glass bottle rectangular in shape with a two inch smaller neck. No screw on cap I think maybe a cork top but it has two ff's and the date1908 on the bottom. It was found in a creek in the mountains. Just was wondering what might have been in it. I found your website hoping maybe you could help. My parents received as a wedding gift a bar set from 1967. This bar set has a drawer which opens 2 doors. Within the set there are 4 shot glasses, 4 rocks glasses and 4 decanters all labeled appropriately. Like Julie in your questions forum, I too have a brown glazed stoneware type, fat bellied, short narrow necked wide mouth bottle with writing "Federal law prohibits sale or re-use of this bottle". On the bottom it says "Wing Lee Wai China" also with some Chinese writing. I also have another bottle that almost looks identical in size, color and shape, however it has no markings. I inherited both of these from my grandmother along with other items. I have no idea of their history or age. My guess is they were used to store liquor. Hoping you have some information to share. --- I'm sitting here at my computer in Mililani HI looking at what I have always believed to be an early San Miguel beer bottle that I found in an old dump site on the island of Guam in 1970. There were also a couple of green glass coke bottles with Oakland and San Francisco stamped on the bottom, the kind I used to buy for a nickel when I was a kid and never had enough of in that 6 oz. size. However, the beer bottle is black glass, or olive green if you hold it up to the light, according to the info. I learned from a website today. I'm guessing beer, because it has an inch and a quarter by an inch and a quarter raised S over an M that looks like it was written on with a molten glass pen. I'm sure it was produced by the mold but it looks like it was dripped on . Guam is close to the Phillipines and San Miguel has, or had a brewery there. It is a BIM bottle unlike the ABM coke bottles, I had never noticed the seams on any bottle before seeing the website today.The base has the words, SUCCESSORS OFPPROXAS as well. The bottle is also straighter on one side than the other and has a handmade look. I am hoping to connect with someone who has the reference material and can tell me about this bottle. Digger, Assistance please. Stoneware, light warm brown, glaze is worn especially at the crown neck, seems poorly made with imperfections. Ht. 6 1/2 inches, base (no markings) 2 5/8 inch diameter. Crown neck 7/8 inch. Label is indented, as if made by rolling bottle over a raised marker before firing, only one, positioned level with the bottom edge, measuring 1 7/8 inches tall and 3 1/8 inches wide. Markings in label include the word "Schweppes" in fancy letters running in a banner from the bottom left to the top right. Then in less fancy 'font' at the top left there is a crown preceding the words: "TO THE EEN"; at the bottom right is "TO THE PRINCE OF WALES" followed by a fleur-de-lie. I have only looked at the web. When I search under "Schweppes" I find glass bottles but not the stoneware. Too common to collect? I am not a collector. This was a gift.
