Subject: unusual brown bottle
Date: 02-11-2003
Hi Digger, I have this very unusual brown bottle (pictures attached) and I was wondering if you could perhaps give me some information on it. It measures about 11.5 inches tall and is made of ceramic with a shiny glaze. The bottle is unevenly glazed over scratches and pits. Most of it is brown, but the top is blackish. The body of the bottle appear to be a single piece with the spout attached separately. The bottle itself is actually bent, as you can see from the pictures. The writing near the top of the bottle appears to say: "F. Van Gent's Distilleerdery N. V. Schiedam". The letter "F" is mostly covered in glaze, so it may be a different letter. Beneath that, near the bottom of the bottle, appear the words: "1 Liter". There is no writing anywhere else on the bottle. I've been able to find out that this bottle is Dutch, but have no other information on it. I bought the bottle at a thrift store about 10 years ago for a couple of dollars. ~Nathan
Nathan your bottle looks like a Dutch gin bottle and I would guess the date to be around 1900 and the value at $20-30. Digger.

Subject: Question???????wells and privey's

Hey Digger, My name is Andy and live in southern Virginia , near Chatham. There's a 1765 Federal style house that is on the Historical Register..."Little Cherrystone", I happen to know the people that own it, I found a rock lined well about 20 foot deep and 2 foot wide. Is it worth the time to explore the bottom of it? Plus I'm still looking for where the Privy might have been, I'm going back where the gully was and see if I can find anything there. Also I found a old log house and found 3 privy's the newer one had disposable diapers in it , then the other 2 were side by side. I've dug and probed about half of the the later and have turned up nothing. Do you sometimes find nothing in the privy's and do you think I should dig the other one up too. At the gulley dump I've found pop bottles dating to the early 1920's and some medicine bottles too. Any help would be appreciated and thank's for a wonderful web page to read on digging. Regards, Andy
Digging wells or anything twenty feet deep is a dangerous undertaking without the proper equipment and knowledge. People often did throw things down an old well but mostly you will find the well filled or partially filled. If the well still has standing water then exploring it will be even more difficult as a pump would be needed. The chances of finding something in a well with standing water would be small. A copy of my Secrets of Privy Digging would give you good guidelines Digger

Thank you for replying to my e-mail. I will visit your site and invite my friends to do so as well. Fortunately and unfortunately, the "Road Show" has prompted a lot of us out here in "hopeful land" thinking we might have the next undiscovered "da Vinci" (I am making a funny observation, I enjoy the show & like so many others do look for quality when I go out "hunting".) I bought the jar for $1.00 but had never seen that particular brand of tobacco product and was curious. I love the crockery. Down here in the deep south one runs across a great many tobacco related products. Usually, however, Marlboro and chewing tobacco. I simply find it interesting that there was a company producing a snuff in a crockery jar. Thank you again, sir.

DEAR DIGGER, I have a very old vinegar jug/ picture that has been handed down to me some years back by my mother. I have tried to research it until recently. Mother is 86 years young and say's she can never remember it not being around. It is 6'' tall and has a 4'' diameter. It has a dark brown glaze type finish on it. It would probably hold abut a pint. The spout & handle both have thumb / finger marks on where they were formed / pressed on to the jug . On the front of the jug is the inscription that appears to have been scratched on with a straw or small utensil of some type. It reads '' Compliments of Wallace & Gregory Bros. Pure Vinegars Paducah Ky.'' Any information you could find on it's history, rarity, value, age etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again for your time and efforts. SINCERLY LLOYD LUNA
Sounds quite rare and probably has a good value maybe $150 or more. More than likely made between 1870-1910 Digger

Jugs with Mercury imprinted upon them are quite common and often found in antique stores and malls for $30-40. The S.S. White Company was located in Philadelphia and was apparently a highly successful business. they registered numerous trademarks one of which might be your product. Digger

It was made by the John Puhl Products Co, Chicago, IL, Pat. # 112219. Other numbers embossed at the bottom are 9 5 10. While reading your website and responses to others I know the value is only $1 - $2. However, could you please tell me what Fleecy White was and also a little history on the company. Thank you. The amber bottles are embossed around the shoulder and had a black plastic cap. They contained bleach. In the late 1950s the Fleecy brand owned by the John Puhl Products Company was purchased and merged with Purex. The Puhl Company was the fourth largest producer of bleach in the US at that time and Purex wanted to move into new geographic areas. the bottles have little value often selling for $1-2 or less.

Today I purchased a bottle that caught my eye initially because it was a perfectly-intact "sea glass bottle"--------I scavange shores of Long Island, NY, and every other place I've visited that has a shore, for those smooth, "weathered" pale-colored pieces of smooth glass for over 20 years now. The bottle, the owner stated, was a ballast. I bought that idea, but researched on-line to find out more. I can discribe it to you-------- *8 3/8" high, aqua in color, crown top (as per the web-site), 2 seams up the sides and neck, but not over the lip, "Ten Pin" shape, plain 1 1/4" inverted round bottom, clearly marked on the bulge of the bottle: "Carl H Schultz C-P M-S PAT MAY 1868 NEW YORK"-----she's a beauty!!!!!!!!!! The condition is very good----considering it sure looks like it has been washed by the ocean and the sand----the markings are easily read. My questions are: Was this a carbonated water bottle (or mineral water?) (or soda?), and what was used to seal it originally, AND, were these bottles ever used as ballasts on ships??? Sure hope you can help me------thanks--Gail

Hi, I have a stretched green 7-up bottle, about 1.5 feet long. It has a long neck, and all the words and logos are stretched out. I'm not sure, but on the bottom of the bottle are the numbers, 7, 11, 72, so i'm guessing it was made in 1972. It looks like a regular 7-up bottle since the ingredients, ounces(16), and logos appear on the bottle, except for the fact that it is stretched. Can you please tell me where this is from, and how much it is worth? Thank you. (By the way, your site is very informative.)

Hi, I got your address from a bottle site I found using google. My father, who isn't on the net, asked me to search for information concerning a baby bottle he used as a child. Notes on the Bottle: - There are no markings or words on the bottle - The bottle is clear glass - The bottle is about 8.5 inches in height - I don't really know about seams per se it appears to be a solid piece The bottle was used by my father as his baby bottle. He is 70 years old and the youngest in his family so it may be older than that. My family comes from Northern Mexico and the Big Bend area of Texas and it was probably blown in either of those regions. Enclosed are a couple pics which I hope help and don't take too long to load. Anything you can say about it would be appreciated John and Tammy Oyerbides

Hello, Thank you for reading this. We are helping my Mom clear out her house and came across a clear glass bottle that has a "gauge" on the side in raised lettering. It has 200-1000 on the left side of the gauge and 0-900 on the right side of the gauge but upside down and going up, with the 900 beyond the "shoulder". On the bottom is Abbot Laboratories in large lettering, an emblem that I can't make out in the middle (It seemes to be a large O with a flattened oval crossing it horizontally and a character in the middle of it. On the left side of the emblem is a 12. On the right is a 3. Below it is a 10 with a line of four little circles under it. The lid says "DEX.10% IN RINGER'S." Is it something to do with Dextrose that used to be used in baby formula? Is it of any value? I would love to be able to tell Mom that she has a treasure! Thanks again for your time!

Hi Digger. I wonder how you ever get to do any collecting of your own with so many questions to answer! Well, I have a bottle I found in some woods recently and I can't find anything out about it except that I was given a rough date of 1865-1875, it's an aqua ale bottle, and that it may have originated from from the Burlington, Ohio area. Could it have been a bottle of Skookum Maple Syrup? Dear Digger, thank you for your devotion to a bunch of nuts out here! I recently bought an amber 8, 1/4" tall bottle with a longish crude neck, glop type top (like a whiskey), seams running up to within 3/4 " of the top. The neck of the bottle runs down into rounded shoulders and into 4 slightly indented side (like a bitters) that make the bottom of the bottle a slightly tapered square about 3" square on the bottom. The base is not hinge mold but there is a round impression ( not a pontil). The embossing is Mond'or in a semicircle, above Russian Tonic the below that skoo-kum! All In Capitol letters. It's a fantastic find, I believe, needs cleaning but in great shape beyond that. Skoo-kum I have found out in native American (chinook) means powerful! Tonic is related to bitters so I am wondering if I have found an Indian type bitters. Mond'or, I have found on the Internet is French. Never-the-less, this is one I have never seen, have you heard of a skoo-kum bottle beyond this one, do you think it's a bitters and do you have any idea of any history of a Mond'or company or Russian Tonic Company? It has many bubbles and looks to be around 1880's or so. Thank you so much for any info you may have!!! Blessings, Lianne PEtersen
Your bottle does sound like a great find. I was not able to locate any information about it. Obviously it must be rare. The only other bottle I can think of which has the word "Skookum" is "Skookum Root Hair Grower." I could not establish a connection between that company and your bottle. Bitters collectors would not consider your bottle to be a bitters. There are thousands of products which used the word "Tonic." Digger

Dear Digger, I am a 5th grader who went on a dig with our class. I found a part of a bottle and I have a few questions. It's clear and rectangular. There is raised writing on one side and the bottom. The top is broken off. The writing on the side says "...B. Evans" , "Apothecary" & "Philadelphia" The bottom says "W. T. Co.", "D", "U.S.A.". The bottom has a kick-up. The rest of the bottle is missing. It's approx. 5 1/2" tall, 3" wide and 2" deep. Can you tell how old it is? What was it used for? I need this information for my homework. Please write back soon! Thanks, Nicole
The base embossing is the name of the glass company that made this bottle. They were called Whitall Tatum Co. in business under that name from 1857-1924. Your bottle falls into the latter part probably dating to around 1880-1900. You can probably find out much more about the company by searching the web. The bottle is obviously a drugstore bottle "Apothecary." the drugstore would had ordered these bottles from the glassmaker. The drugstore name was put on the face of the bottle and the glassmaker's mark on the base. the bottle could have contained anything from cough syrup to dangerous drugs. Ther was not much regulation back in those days and you could buy many kinds of chemicals and drugs without a prescription. There is no way to know exactly what it might have contained. Digger PS I always try to answer budding archaeologists

Hello Digger, First thank you for your efforts to maintain a web page! Among my bottles "rescued" from the previous farmer's dump, I have a twelve inch tall, brown [amber?] [what I would call] wine-shaped bottle with "GEO BRAUN BOTTLER" embossed between two circles. On the bottom half of that circle is embossed: "2219 PINE St. S.F." In the center of the inter circle is a shield shape with a "C" [G?] and "B" on top of each other. Most of my bottles from the old burn site are Jesse Moores. Is my Braun bottle whiskey also? What dates was this produced? The bottom has faintly embossed PCGW, which I read means Pacific Coast Glass Works. The bottle was made in a press. It had a cork-type lid; though, I can tell how it was applied. The seem stops at the "lip", but I can't tell if it "ran up underneath it" or not. I have some aqua and white medicine and sarsaparilla bottles from the same site. The most interesting one, I find, is the tri-corner, ridged, brown colored poison bottle! (I also have three pumpkin seed bottles from my previous homesite.) I have found a bottle that is about 12" tall and orange/brown in color. It has a small handle near the top on the back. No lid. There is a logo on the front. It is a circle that has the letters RHENS around a object I cannot make out. Beneath the logo it reads: RHEIN:PREUSSEN. Could you tell me anything about this bottle. I have a decent bottle collection, but this is the "oddest" bottle I've come across. Thank you for your time. I have no idea. Sounds European to me, maybe German. In German the words Rhein Preussen translate as Rhine Prussian. Digger - - - - - I have found pieces of such a bottle here in Manhattan, where the Hessian troops were hold out in 1776. It is actually a stoneware seltzer bottle from Germany. Rhens is a town on the Rhein River. The symbol in the middle of the circle must be the same as on the piece of the bottle I have: two crossed keys on the right, with what looks like a flag on the left. I am hoping someday to verify that such bottles (or pieces) from here in Manhattan date to 1776. Any comments? Thanks. Frank Fenlon

Hi-entered your website for the first time-facinating stuff. I have a bottle I would like to know if it is worth anything. It was found at the Rockaway beach many years ago. It is a short little bottle kind of green tint to it. It has a raised picture of some men sitting at a table and has Brock L Carroll in raised letters over the men and Far Rockaway LI underneath them. On the back of the bottle it has raised letters BLC overlaid on each other and Registered underneath that. I can't find any information on this company. One guy told me this is pre-1890. Can you help?

I have three bottles all unopened. The seals, tax stamps and the Bols labels are all still intact. I am trying to find out anything about them and would also like to find some type of value. I have attached pictures. In the pictures from left to right, I will identify them ?left?, ?right?, and ?center?. Left: 9 ¾ ? tall, 4? wide, 2 indentions in the bottle for pouring. The red & white seal on the top (over the red & black seal) ?US Internal Revenue Tax Paid?, ?US Internal Revenue Distilled Spirits. The BOLS label reads a lot of info. The main is ?Erven Lucas Bols Amsterdam ? Crème di Menthe Peppermint Liqueur? The other tax stamp has 1/5 gallon, State of Indiana Excise and Enforcement tax paid with numbers 33121921 The bottom has a number 56 and Royal Holland Pewter Co., daalderod, made in Holland with the letters KMD. All the markings on the bottom are stamped into the material. They are not painted or applied with a label attached. Center: 7 ¾ ? tall, 3? wide and no indentions. There is and extra white label on the backside that says ?Sale Distributors for the United States The Jos Garneau Co., New York, NY The Indiana excise stamp number is 0218882, 1/10 gallon. The bottom is the same as the bottle above (Left) Right: 5? tall, 4 ½ wide, The top has a stopper made of the same material. The other two have cork only. Where you pour out has a small lip for pouring. The Indiana excise stamp has 002854521. There is an additional BOLS tag tied with a gold tassel type stuck under the bottle stamp. The tag attached has Erven Lucas Anno 1575 BOLS, gold tag white writing. Any more information you need I will gladly submit. If you need better pictures please inquire. Any and all information you can give me will greatly be appreciated. Thanking you in advance. Carolyn Webb

Subject: Wheaton Bottle Question
Date: 16-11-2003
Hello..I'm writing to you, because I'm not sure what I have. I was watching on T.V., some Flea Market show, and they were talking about old bottles. I had been to an auction a few years back and bought a box of "stuff" for a $1.00, in the bottom of this box, were 5 blue bottles. I never thought any more about the bottles, other than they looked old. They've been sitting on my shelf, and when I watching was the show tonight, it peeked my curiousity, and I looked at the bottoms. All 5 bottles have "WHEATON N.J." on the bottom. I found your site, and saw the pictures of the "Blue Minis", which, one bottle does look like one of the bottles, directly under the picture of the Blue Minis. Four of these bottles have long necks, the fifth, is kind of square, with rounded shoulders and a short neck. One of the long necked bottles is oval at the bottom, with rounded shoulders, a semi-long neck, and an embossed circled crown on the front. There is also one that looks like the "Eight side Elixer", only it has a long neck, on the bottom where it says Wheaton N.J., there is also something that looks like a copywrite symbel. Both of these bottles have what I would call, rounded lips, compared to the others, where they are flat. I only have one other bottle with the circled "c", only it has something else on the bottom that I can't make out. I tried to take a pencil and paper and trace over it, but I still can't make it out, they almost look like numbers that have been smeared while being made. It also says "BITTERS" in embossed letters on the side. All the bottles range around 4 or 4 1/2 inches tall and have mold seams. My main question is, could these just be cheap reproductions? I hope the little that I told you helped somewhat, this was a spere of the thing in writing to you...Anything you can tell me, will be greatly appreciated...Thank You..Linda

Dear Digger, Thank you SO much for the information on my bottle!!! It's the best information I've gotten so far. It really helped me out. How do you know so much about bottles?! I went to the website link that you gave me. It has a description of a cottage in Wild-Wood-by the Sea. Is that a description on what the label had on it? I have a couple more pieces of bottles that I need to research. One of them is a piece of a side of a bottle. On this aritfact, it says "ug Co., Orlando, Fla.". It is clear glass. There is no mold seam on this shard, but there may be on the bottle. I don't know. It has an air bubble in the glass. I have scanned in a picture that I drew of the shard. My second shard has pictures of little boats on it. I believe it is a piece of pottery and not a bottle, so I don't know if you can help me on this one, but I'll give you the information anyway in case you can. On the bottom, it says "07". On the top of the piece, it is blue and white. Here is a scan of my drawing of this piece. The last piece I'm researching is a part of a purple tinted bottle. It's the top portion. It has the lip to a little below the shoulder. The mold seam goes all the way to right below the lip. It has screw threads on the lip. The mouth of the bottle is 2 inches across. Hear is another picture. Please send any information back as soon as possible. Thank you so much for all your help!! I really appreciate it. Alyson

Dear Digger, I recently found a box full of different glass antiques wrapped in lace in a box in my great-grandmothers attic under the rafters. One piece in particular stumps me. I am not sure if it is a vase or a bottle. It is very tall and the neck is very narrow. It is 17" tall. The bottom is round but running your hand over it, it feels kind of ribbed like. Also along the bottom it looks like tiny cracks in the glass. It also looks like teeny ting bubbles are in the glass along the neck part. It is Amber/Yellowish in color. The lip of the piece it irregular in shape and sort of slants on one side. There are no marks on the bottom to indicate who made it where it came from or the time it was made. I believe it to be hand blown. I was hoping you could give me a general idea as to what it is (bottle or vase), who made it or where it came from and a time period. Also some sort of value of this piece would be nice. Thanks for helping. I am sending a few pictures to give you an idea, however, my camera is very cheap so the pictures probably wont be very good quality. Good evening. I am wondering if I have something someone else may want. I am looking for someone to help me determine this and if so, share a few dollars. I dug up a cobalt blue "Genuine Phillips Milk of Magnesia" bottle on a peice of property I owned a few years back. This property only had a foundation left from an old homestaed many years back from what I understand. The bottle has a metal, very rusted screw cap on it, one that I am sure will not come off. The blue glass and writing within the glass if in excellent condition. The thing that I think may be of greatest interest is that there is some still inside the bottle. At this point it appears to be a whitepowdery substance, almost resembling white sand, not much, maybe a palm-ful. If you have any information that would help me I would greatly appreciate it. I wish you a wonderful weekend and a Happy Thanksgiving. Sincerely, Jennifer Jones

I myself have a bottle, but it was not found in America, it was dug up in rural Australia, and so my question - I was wondering whether this company exported internationally? I only seem to find information about this on American websites, so I'm not really sure. So, hoping you can satiate my curiosity, and hoping I'm not disturbing the wrong person... -Silvia

Hello: I have quite a mystery. After searching many hours and many sites, I still cannot come up with any information regarding (2) bottle/jar/jugs that I have. I don't know which term describes them best. They are brown glazed stoneware, fat bellies, short narrow necks, wide mouth openings, the writing on both is "Federal law prohibits sale or re-use of this bottle" the bottom of the bottles "Wing Lee Wai China" also with some Chinese writing. I am hoping that you can shed some light on this mystery. Maybe I've just got junk here, but a history would sure be nice to know. These bottles still have the seals and labels intact one perfect and the other ok. Thanks Garry

Date: 23-11-2003
Dear Digger: I have two bottles, both 10 inches tall and 2+1/2 inches wide at the base, both marked "Trade/Clicquot Club/Mark". The clear bottle is marked "Registered" at the base, and has a triangle imprinted at the bottom. The clear green bottle is also marked "Registered" near its base, but on its bottom is the imprint of an Eskimo holding a soda bottle in his right hand with the neck of the bottle pointing off his left shoulder and held by his left hand. About waist high are the letters "A'" on his right and "B' on his left. About shin height on his right is "26", on his left is "N". Can you give me any idea when these bottles were made? Where? And, when did Cliquot Club stop using bottles? With thanks in advance, Very truly, Al Gehn

Hi there!, I've been working on a job site that used to be the city dump. It was shut down in the early fifties from what I understand. I found an old Bryll cream bottle in good condition, I haven't cleaned it yet. And I was wondering if there was a good way to do it, and how do I find out about the date of manufacture? I haven't got a clue as to where to look or even if it has a value!

Date: 26-11-2003
I happened across your website and saw a question "I have a bottle that I am having trouble finding any information on. The bottle is roughly 5" tall. It is is a clear bottle embossed with "wm c Gregory" and "marblehead mass." with "pure drugs" in the center. Any help would be appreciated. Phil johnson Brookline, nh". Wm. C. Gregory was a druggist who had a store on School Street, Marblehead Massachusetts in the late 19th and early 20th century. This building was still standing (and had a Coca-Cola ad with his name on it on the side, faded, but legible) up until earlier this year. A pizza restaurant had rented part of the building about 20 years ago and had constructed its kitchen with the oven right up against the wall. The wall charred from the inside over the years and burst into flame one evening. The building was destroyed and came down in June or so. When I was a child in Marblehead the building contained the Water Department office and a soda fountain (probably a descendant of Gregory's establishment). I'm sure you've gotten other answers to this question, but I hope it's shed a bit more light on the subject. Regards Chris Hansen

Date: 26-11-2003
Dear Mr. Odell, I was walking through the woods the other day and I stumbled on a bottle that has the label "Warranted Flask." I don't collect bottles, but just for fun I went online and searched for info on them. I came across a lot of pictures of "Warranted Flask" bottles and although they are the same shape and size there are 2 differences in the label. 1. The "Warranted Flask" label is surrounded by a fancy design....and the letters for the most part are raised and crisp, however the S in Flask is lighter and smooth. 2. The below the "Warranted Flask" label is a label that says "UNION MADE." Any info about this would be greatly appreciated Thanks, Doug Skinner

Date: 26-11-2003
I am attempting to find the worth of an unopened, mint condition bottle of Heidsieck & Reims Dry Monopole Champagne bottled in France in 1924, contents is 1 pint, 10 fluid ounces. Import distributor is Park & Tilford of New York, New York. There is also a small label stating "By appointment to H.M. King George V. (as you can tell from all the information I am able to get from the labels, the bottle is indeed in mint condition) I found this in an elder family members home and am wondering its worth. I have no clue where to even begin to look, but found your site during a search. If you have any information on the worth of this bottle of champagne or know where I could get more information I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you! Sincereley, Jessica Dickman

Subject: Interesting bottle
Date: 26-11-2003
Hello Digger: I am from WV. I had a cousin who worked at the cemetery & everyone called hi Digger O'Dell. I now live near Seattle & I recently obtained an interesting bottle. It is 9 inches tall, the bottle opening is 1 1/2". It is bulbous shape and the neck arches backwards. It has a spout that narrows to a pinhole opening. It has a cork stopper & is connected by a small chain to a collar that fastens around the neck. The cork and the bottle are covered with tooled leather that is mostly floral and leafy. Below the neck a man's head is tooled. He has a large droopy mustache, a nicely trimmed beard and a receding hairline. He has a large ruffled collar that gives him a Shakespearian look. I would like to have an idea of it's origin and value. I work for a non profit agency for developmentally disabled people & I am always looking for ways to make $$$ to help them. There is no damage & the bottle looks completely unused. I am very patient & will check your website periodically. I will also try to get a photo to you next week. Barb B

Hello! I realize you are overloaded, but I would appreciate any help I can get. I recently found a bottle under my house while digging a new foundation. Picture is enclosed. Its a flask type bottle with glass and cork stopper; across the front it says "Taylor & Williams Incorporated", with Louisville, Kentucky around the bottom. It is 6.5 inches tall with stopper inserted, 3 1/8 inches wide at the body, and 1 3/4 inches thick. On the bottom it says, Yellowstone Bottle, some other letters I cant make out, and a capital letter I inside a diamond. The bottom looks like there was a hole in it, and a piece of glass inserted into the hole and fused shut. Its made of clear glass, with some stretched bubbles in the glass, and some rainbow effect not visible in the photo. There is a seam running down each side, faintly visible on the neck, looks to have been ground smooth when it was made. I've tried looking on the internet for taylor and..... with no luck...... Any idea as to the manufacturer, age, value, etc? Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Michael
