PROBING INDICATED WE STILL HAD ALONG WAY TO GO TO GET TO LAYER.  IF THERE WAS A LAYER.

FROM TIME TO TIME, I'D LOOK AT THE 1860S THREE STORY HOUSE AND WONDER WHO HAD LIVED HERE AND HOW THEIR LIVES WERE DIFFERENT.

THE HOLE WAS NOW 18 FEET DOWN.  FROM THE TOP IN THE BRIGHT DAYLIGHT IT WAS GETTING HARDER TO SEE BOTTOM. EVERY FOOT OR SO TIME HAD TO BE TAKEN TO LOWER THE INNER TUBE.  IT WAS THEN SECURED AT THAT LEVEL AND DIGGING CONTINUED.

LIGHTENING THE EXPOSURE REVEALS TED STILL DIGGING. THEN FINALLY A BOTTLE OR TWO COMES UP. THIS 1870S SODA CONFIRMS OUR CONJECTURES ABOUT THE AGE OF THE HOUSE.

THE FIRST BOTTLE OUT OF THE HOLE WAS THIS AQUA EMBOSSED WINE. IT SAT AT THE TOP OF A FOUR FOOT DEEP SAND LAYER.  BELOW THE SAND LAYER WAS A SHALLOW USE LAYER WITH BOTTLES AND THEN MORE SAND AND BOTTOM. TOTAL DEPTH WAS ABOUT 22-23 FEET.

MORE BOTTLES, A DOLL'S LEG AND SOME EARLIER SHARDS SHOWED UP.  THE SQUAT SODAS WERE 1870S IN AGE.  WE DON'T CARE THAT WE ARE NOT FINDING MUCH FOR THE EFFORT.  WE ARE JUST HAPPY THAT WE ARE FINDING SOMETHING BUT OUR HOPES FOR THE GLORY HOLE ARE SERIOUSLY DIMMED.

A MINIATURE HANDLESS CUP SHARD PREDATES OCCUPATION ON THIS SITE.  THE STYLE SUGGESTS THE 1840S OR EARLIER.
